Much of the speculation surrounding the opening weeks of Manchester United’s summer transfer window has surrounded Erik ten Hag’s attempts to add a top class striker to his squad.

But the Red Devils manager has some major calls to make at the other end of the pitch as the futures of David de Gea and Dean Henderson remain up in the air. United stalwart De Gea is now officially a free agent after his contract expired on Friday and little is known about what the short-term future could hold for the Spain international. Henderson spent last season on loan at Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest and Steve Cooper is believed to be keen to take the England stopper to the City Ground in a permanent deal during the summer.

United’s efforts to bring in a new keeper have centred on interest in Internazionale number one Andre Onana, who was a big part of the Serie A side’s run to the Champions League Final last season. However, The Mirror have reported Ten Hag’s £60m move for Mason Mount means he will not be able to fund a deal for Onana unless he is able to raise further funds by selling a number of members of his squad. As a result, the report states the former Ajax manager is considering alternatives to the 34-times capped Cameroon international and his interest is now focused on Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Kevin Trapp.

Dutch star Bijlow is said to be available for around £20m and Trapp would command a fee of around £10m, meaning Ten Hag could bring in the two stoppers for half of the price Inter are believed to be demanding for Onana.

Former United star trains with Lionel Messi’s new club

Former Manchester United star Jesse Lingard is looking for a new club after an unsuccessful one-year stay at Nottingham Forest came to a close last week.

The 30-year-old openly discussed the possibility of a move to Saudi Arabia as the Pro League continues to attract a number of big names from across Europe. However, Lingard shared a recent Instagram post showing he was practicing at the training ground of MLS side Inter Miami. The club is owned by former United star David Beckham and will soon have Argentina and Barcelona legend Lionel Messi as part of their squad after he agreed to join in the aftermath of his departure from Paris Saint-Germain.

Inter’s MLS rivals DC United were linked with a move for Lingard but manager and United legend Wayne Rooney has denied all knowledge, saying: "I don't know where that has come from," he said. "From my point of view we have no interest in signing him."
