140-cap international is 'already exploring options for next season' as Man Utd exit decision is 'made'

The former Tottenham and Brentford star has struggled for form at Man Utd this season

Experienced Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen is one of the high-profile names that will leave the club at the end of the season, it has been reported.

The former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker was absent for the 1-0 defeat against his former club at the weekend with illness and has struggled for minutes since Ruben Amorim’s arrival from Sporting CP.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the 33-year-old Danish international is no longer a part of Amorim’s plans at Old Trafford as he aims to cut the wage bill and bring in his own personnel over the summer.

Romano confirmed the news in a post on X, which reads: “Christian Eriksen will soon start exploring options for his next chapter, as he’s set to leave Man United at the end of the season. His contract won’t be extended and Eriksen will be a free agent in the summer.”

Christian Eriksen’s career at Man Utd

Former Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur star Christian Eriksen arrived at United in 2022 to great fanfare after a hugely successful six-month spell at Brentford. He had suffered a cardiac arrest playing for Denmark just 12 months prior to his arrival at the club, but had proven he was still one of the best in the business at the Gtech Community Stadium after creating the third most opportunities in the league during his six months in London with only Kevin de Bruyne and Martin Odegaard outperforming him in that metric.

Eriksen had played 237 games in the Premier League, registering 52 goals and 71 assists. After arriving at United and told the club website: “Manchester United is a special club, and I cannot wait to get started. I have had the privilege of playing at Old Trafford many times but to do it in the red shirt of United will be an amazing feeling.”

In his first season, he showed signs of promise and registered one goal and 10 assists in 44 appearances to help his team secure Champions League qualification and a League Cup triumph. However, his second season was marred by injuries as he registered just one goal and eight assists for a team which finished eighth in the Premier League.

This season has proven to be his most difficult in a United shirt and after managing just one assist in 13 matches, he has been deemed surplus to requirements moving forward by Amorim. The midfielder has earned an impressive 140 caps at international level.

Man Utd out of contract stars

Christian Eriksen is one of just four high-profile stars that are set to leave Old Trafford if they fail to agree new deals in the coming months. Veteran defender Jonny Evans, who re-signed for the club two seasons ago is another due to leave alongside experienced back-up goalkeeper Tom Heaton.

Meanwhile, Swedish international defender Victor Lindelof, who is now the second longest-serving player at the club behind Luke Shaw, has also been told he has no future at the club after an eight-year association with the team.
