Manchester United are planning to use artificial intelligence to help improve on-field performances, as part of a flagship partnership between the club and Manchester Metropolitan University’s (MMU) Institute of Sport.

The club announced on Thursday that they will work with the Institute of Sport to launch ‘research and innovation projects’ which includes the creation of two PhD programmes.

One study will use AI techniques to analyse data captured in matches to then gain performance-based insights. “This project aims to develop deep insights into the technical, tactical, and physical demands of elite football match-play using AI to create advantage on the pitch,” says the study’s application page, which is open now.

The second project will analyse the number of ACL injuries in women’s football, which is significantly higher than in men’s football, and look at how these numbers can be reduced. “The PhD aims to investigate ACL injury risk mitigation in female football through a multifactorial approach,” explains the application page's summary.

As part of the new collaboration between United and MMU, students will also be provided with the opportunity to take part in work experience and mentoring programmes through the club, and will receive guest lectures and workshops delivered by United staff.

The partnership has not been implemented by the incoming Ineos regime and was suggested last year by Richard Hawkins (director of football insights & innovation) and Andy O'Boyle (deputy football director).

John Murtough, Manchester United football director, said: “We are constantly striving to be at the forefront of innovation and advancement in football performance and this initiative will reinforce those efforts.

“Working with the Institute of Sport will build on our excellent existing research and innovation teams in order to further enhance the performance and development support that we are able provide for our players.”
