With the international break drawing to a close, it's back to business for Manchester United as Erik ten Hag looks to find a winning formula in the Premier League. The Red Devils have been inconsistent so far this season but, now eight matches in, summer signings should have bedded in and the Dutchman is running short of excuses. Here's your Thursday evening transfer round-up.

Newcastle United enter race for Manchester United target

Manchester United and Newcastle United are reported to be interested in a move for Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot. The 28-year-old alerted a number of big clubs when he only signed a one-year contract extension at the Italian giants this summer, appearing to be keen to keep his options open. The French international has won five Ligue 1 titles and a Serie A in his glittering career to date and would be a major coup for a number of clubs.

Writing in Fabrizio Romano's Daily Briefing, French football expert Johnathan Johnson claimed that Newcastle United could look at Rabiot as a Sando Tonali replacement, should their summer signing be hit with a ban for gambling controversy. Manchester United are also believed to be long-term admirers of Rabiot having previously agreed a £15 million transfer for the star, which fell through.

Johnson said: “As has been widely reported, Rabiot has been of interest to a large number of clubs outside of Italy in the last few years – PSG thought about trying to bring him back, while Premier League clubs such as Manchester United, Newcastle, and others have looked at him as well."

Red Devils could rekindle interest in Spurs star

Manchester United could reignite interest in Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has reported that the 'situation remains open' for the defensive midfielder to seek pastures new either in January or next summer. The Red Devils were reported to be interested in the star during the last window but ultimately finalised a deal with Sofyan Amrabat.

Recent performances from Scott McTominay have added fuel to the fire surrounding his future at Old Trafford with the impressive Scotsman seemingly unlikely to accept a bit-part much longer - he was the subject of a £30 million West Ham bid this summer. McTominay's departure could leave Erik ten Hag looking to recruit in midfield once again and a potential deal for Hojbjerg could be in the offing, although Manchester United would have to fend off reported interest from Juventus.
