Manchester United reportedly face competition from Premier League rivals Newcastle United for the signing of Monaco defender Axel Disasi.

The 25-year-old has been a central figure with the Ligue 1 club since making a £10million move to the Stade Louis II Stadium in the summer of 2020. Disasi has gone on to make over 125 appearances in all competitions for Monaco and his form earned him a maiden call-up to the France squad last season.

He featured in their 1-0 defeat against Tunisia at the World Cup Finals as a 90-minute appearance marked the first of four senior caps, with the last coming as a late substitute in a 3-0 Euro 2024 qualifier win against Gibraltar last month.

Disasi has been linked with several clubs around Europe in recent months but journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed the two Uniteds are ‘exploring’ a move for the versatile defender.

Speaking via his Twitter account, he said: “Newcastle and Manchester United are both exploring Disasi deal, no bids yet. Newcastle approached player side this week, expected to make contact with Monaco.Ten Hag approved Disasi — talks for weeks on player side but still waiting for approach with Monaco.”

Eredivise club keen on United winger

The 21-year-old made ten senior appearances for the Red Devils last season and registered a single assist when he set up Marcus Rashford to scored in a 3-0 Carabao Cup win against Charlton Athletic. However, there have been suggestions he could make a second loan move of his career this summer after he spent two spells with Spanish club Alaves earlier in his career and reports in Holland suggest one club has already made their interest known.

Dutch outlet Voetbal International have quoted Vitesse technical director Jan Streuer as saying: “We know him (Pellistri), but we also know other interesting players.”

Pellistri would not be the only United player to make the switch to the Netherlands this summer if he does make a loan move to Vitesse after Zidane Iqbal joined FC Utrecht on a permanent deal last month.
