Man Utd 3-0 Brentford: Player ratings and man of the match as Fernandes, Ronaldo & Varane score

Manchester United enjoyed one of their better performances of what has been a dismal season.

Manchester United won their final home game of the season 3-0 against Brentford on Monday.

It was a much improved display from the Red Devils, who bid farewell to Nemanja Matic and most likely Juan Mata and Edinson Cavani, whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season.

United took the lead after just nine minutes when Anthony Elanga’s fizzed cross was turned in by Bruno Fernandes, who charged into the box and unleashed a powerfully placed strike past David Raya.

The Bees were second best in the opening 45 minutes, but did have a few decent efforts, including a Christian Eriksen shot that was saved, Ivan Toney header which flashed over, while Bryan Mbeumo hit the side netting with a powerful effort.

As for United, they dominated possession in the first half and went close via a Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick before Mata fired wide after snatching at a shot with his right foot.

United did add another before the break when Mata teed up Ronaldo for a side-foot finish just inside the box, but after a VAR check the goal was chalked off for offside in the build-up.

In the second half, the Red Devils added another just after the hour mark, when Ronaldo was knocked to the ground inside the box and was awarded a penalty, which he duly smashed past Raya.

Soon after, his ex-Real Madrid team-mate, Raphael Varane, netted a third when he met an inswinging corner and prodded it into the net.

Brentford had previously tested De Gea with efforts from Eriksen and Toney after the break, but United were on top for most of the night at Old Trafford.

Mathias Jensen went close late on, but his shot, which was the last real chance of the game, was blocked en route to goal.
