Erik ten Hag urged his Manchester United players to look at the positives during half-time of their 2-2 draw with Liverpool yesterday.

Liverpool were by the far the better side in the opening exchanges of the match and took a deserved lead when Luis Diaz fired in unmarked from a corner following some schoolboy defending.

United were much improved after the break as stunning goals from Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes turned the game on its head, but Liverpool drew level late on when Mohamed Salah finished from the spot.

The point was not enough to reignite United’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League but there were certainly some positives to take from the way they responded after the break.

Speaking after the match, Mainoo explained to Match of the Day what had been said when his side went in a goal down. "He (Ten Hag) said get ourselves back into the game, there was some positives but we were behind in this type of fixtures it is going to be tough to take. You always have to find something against these teams it was such a big game.

"It left us disappointed. We worked hard to get into the game after a tough first half. We have given it away, ultimately we wanted the three points and it's a big game for us coming to the end of the season.

"To not come away with three points is tough to take. Again penalties have cost us, but we have to keep on working ironing out these details that keep costing us and keep trying to get better."
