Manchester United handed huge fitness boost ahead of Brentford fixture plus Luke Shaw injury update

The confirmed team news as Man Utd take on Brentford in the Premier League fixture this weekend

Lisandro Martinez is set to return to the Manchester United squad for their trip to face Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday night.

The Argentine defender has been missing for the best part of two months after he sustained medial collateral ligament damage to his right knee during United's win against West Ham at the start of February.

Martinez was not involved in any of United's matches before the March international break but did go away with the Argentina squad. He didn't play any matches and returned to Carrington earlier in the week to continue his rehabilitation.

Ten Hag was coy on the other injury news ahead of the trip to Brentford but insisted that a number of players would be back available for selection.

"Yes, there is a chance," Ten Hag told reporters when asked about Martinez's involvement.

"We have missed him every game because he brings a composure in the team, a calmness in the team. At the same time, a winning attitude and he can express this very clearly. He can transfer that into the team and that contributes a lot to our levels."

Quizzed on further injury news he added: "There are players returning, they are back on the pitch they are back in team training. We have one more training now. But it is most likely that we have some players back in the squad."

United also expect to have Luke Shaw back available before the end of the campaign despite Gareth Southgate claiming that he could miss some involvement in the major tournament this summer.

"Yes. I expect him back before the end of the season, that is the plan. He is still on schedule. He will return to our team."

Harry Maguire pulled out of the England squad last weekend, while Marcus Rashford sat out the Three Lions win over Belgium on Tuesday night. Jonny Evans was not called up by Northern Ireland in an effort to manage his fitness after an intense club campaign.

Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are both long-term injury concerns with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot expected to start the Brentford clash.
