Manchester United could have only two fit centre-backs available for selection when they travel to face Brentford in the Premier League this weekend.

Erik ten Hag's side are back in action when they make the trip to London on Saturday night and have been dealt a fresh blow in the build-up to the match.

Harry Maguire withdrew from the England squad over the weekend and has to be considered a doubt to start the weekend match as a result of it. An FA statement read: "Maguire, (Kyle) Walker and (Sam) Johnstone have returned to their respective clubs for assessment having sustained injuries in recent days."

While early suggestions claim the injury is 'not serious' and will only keep him sidelined for a short while, it is less than ideal for United given their current injury situation.

Jonny Evans was not called up for the Northern Ireland squad because of an ‘ongoing’ injury problem and Lisandro Martinez might not be ready to play this weekend despite his encouraging progress as he returns from injury.

It means Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof could be the only two fit senior centre-backs this weekend, with Willy Kambwala also an option if they are short of numbers. The French teenager only has one professional start to his name and will most likely start on the bench.
