Hide AdTimber, who came through the youth ranks of the Dutch club, was a regular starter under Ten Hag last season, making 43 appearances in all competitions.
However, despite reported interest from United, Van Gaal has warned Timber about a move to the club this summer, implying he won’t get sufficient gametime at Old Trafford.
“I think a player with his qualities can play in the Premier League,” Van Gaal told reporters.
“That’s not a problem. But if he has to make this step now… that’s another question. It is not so wise I think [to join United]. He has to play.”

Hide AdTimber’s impressive form for Ajax under Ten Hag has led to the centre-back earning seven caps for the Netherlands national team.
The 20-year-old has also tasted silverware with the Eredivisie side, winning back-to-back league titles and the Dutch Cup last year.
Van Gaal’s comments could indicate a change in Timber’s future with his national team if the defender opts to move to the Red Devils.
The latter would face significant competition for a starting spot at United and this could potentially affect his spot in Van Gaal’s World Cup squad.
