Erik ten Hag said he ‘thinks’ Lisandro Martinez will be fit to face Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

The Manchester United defender was replaced at half-time in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night. Raphael Varane, the match-winner against Wolves, said after the game that Martinez had a ‘little problem on his ankle’, putting the latter's participation in Saturday’s match into doubt.

However, speaking ahead of the Spurs game, Ten Hag said the Argentina international should be available. “He was just training, so I think so, yeah,” explained the United boss.

Assuming Martinez is available, it means United are only expected to be without Tom Heaton, Tyrell Malacia, Kobbie Mainoo, Amad and Rasmus Hojlund for Saturday’s game.

The Red Devils are still trying to build fitness levels at the start of the season, and took part in a pre-season friendly against Everton during the week. “It is very helpful to give the players the minutes at the start of the season, come back in 90 minutes after pre-season,” Ten Hag said, when asked about the game. “It is not that we have pre-season for six weeks, it is more or less four or five weeks, so we need such games to give all the players the opportunity to get into the season.”

United travel to Spurs looking to make it two wins from two in 2023/24. The Red Devils underwhelmed in their opening-weekend victory over Wolves, and Ten Hag said United must improve when they take on Ange Postecoglou’s side on Saturday.

The Australian began his reign as Tottenham boss with a 2-2 draw against Brentford, and faces his first home match in charge this weekend.
