Andy Cole would worry for Manchester United if they signed Matthijs de Ligt and questioned the decision to back another former player of Erik ten Hag’s.

De Ligt is among a number of central defenders to have been linked with a move to United in recent months, with that position a key one to strengthen in the summer. Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans are both out of contract in the summer while Harry Maguire was up for sale last year and it is unclear whether he fits into Ten Hag's long-term plans.

Since taking charge at United in 2022, Ten Hag has made a habit of signing players he knows from the past, such as Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Andre Onana whose fortunes have differed massively. De Ligt also worked under the Dutchman at Ajax and Cole suggests a move for the Bayern man would be narrow-minded of the club.

“Yes it would [worry me] because if he’s had tough times at both Juventus and Bayern Munich, then how can you suggest that he will be a success at Manchester United?" Cole told Betfred. "Matthijs is another player that’s played for Erik ten Hag and the majority of signings that Erik’s made during his time at the club have been players that he’s managed previously.

"The Premier League is a totally different league and the ocean is very, very big when it comes to players. How many other managers in the Premier League have the same approach to transfers? Especially at the top, top level.

"This is probably why there’s speculation suggesting that INEOS are going to restrict his influence over transfers. I think it’s a good thing to be fair because Manchester United can now cast their net wider.”

Any chance of signing De Ligt in the final days of January suffered a blow amid news that Bayern's starting centre-back, Dayot Upamecano, had torn a thigh muscle. The Dutchman is now expected to get more minutes under Thomas Tuchel and will be needed until at least the end of February.

United have been linked with several alternative options, including Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite, Barcelona's Ronald Araujo and Leny Yoro of Lille. All are 24 or below and fit the age profile wanted by Ten Hag, who is keen to find more long-term options in the summer.
