Fabrizio Romano has said a transfer to the Premier League looks unlikely for Kylian Mbappe at this stage, but implied there is still a slight chance of Manchester United completing a deal for the Paris Saint-Germain star.

Mbappe is said to have stunned PSG with a letter confirming he won’t extend his contract, and it’s been widely reported that, with just a year remaining on his current deal, the attacker will complete a transfer away from the French capital this summer.

Real Madrid, who nearly signed the 24-year-old last year, are said to be in the driving seat, especially following the departure of Karim Benzema. That’s certainly the view of transfer guru Romano, who explained that Mbappe has a great relationship with Real president Florentino Perez.

“We know that Real Madrid will be there for sure,” explained the Italian reporter, on his YouTube channel. “Kylian Mbappe already apologised to Florentino Perez one year ago when he decided to sign a new deal at Paris Saint-Germain. It was a shock for Real Madrid but Kylian Mbappe called Perez and apologised for what happened.

“The situation is really clear between Florentino and Mbappe. But Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, the relationship is not good at all. Let’s see the negotiations for this summer because Real Madrid, the original plan was to attack the Mbappe situation in summer 2024.”

As for the chances of other clubs signing Mbappe, Romano said: “Liverpool tried more than one year ago to approach Kylian Mbappe, this was also confirmed by the player. But now Liverpool have different priorities and they don’t have the money to do this sort of deal - same for Bayern. Bayern already pulled out of the race for Victor Osimhen because it was too expensive.

“From Chelsea, they had asked one year ago to be informed about the situation but now the feeling about Chelsea is they want to do different things, they don’t want to enter into crazy things. The situation around Chelsea and Mbappe is quiet. They obviously appreciate the player but sources close to them confirm they are not working on this one, as of now.”

Romano also said a move to Old Trafford appears unlikely, but that could change if United’s takeover process is concluded soon. “With Manchester United, with the Glazers this is not a topic because Manchester United are not working on this deal with the current ownership,” he explained.

“Let’s see what happens if there are new owners and we know the club is up for sale. The takeover story is still on and let’s follow the story and see what will happen, we can’t predict the future so we have to see with Manchester United. But the reality is that Real Madrid have been working on this for a long time. We know the childhood dream of Kylian Mbappe is Real Madrid and this has never changed.”

Mbappe also confirmed that he won’t commit his future to PSG and told AFP: “I have never discussed any contract renewal with PSG. The board has been informed since July 15th, 2022 of my decision not to extend beyond 2024 - and the letter sent was only meant to confirm what I already told them.”

Meanwhile, the ex-Monaco forward tweeted to say he is willing to remain at the Parc des Princes next season: “At the same time, the bigger it is, the more it passes,” he wrote. “I have already said that I will continue next season at PSG where I am very happy.”
