Jamie Carragher and Wes Brown are in agreement over Manchester United's chances against Newcastle United on Wednesday night. United welcome Newcastle to Old Trafford for a round of 16 tie that will be a repeat of last season's final.

Erik ten Hag's men were thrashed by rivals Manchester City as recently as Sunday, and it has been a disappointing start to the season in general. But the Carabao Cup offered United their only taste of silverware last season, and it could yet serve the same purpose this term.

The cups will be important for Ten Hag as he looks to ease pressure surrounding him and his team, but Newcastle are tricky customers, even if they haven't mastered the art of consistency just yet this season.

Still, Liverpool legend Carragher believes the Red Devils will come out on top, telling the EFL's official website: "I'm going to go for Manchester United. I know United have got a lot of injuries at the moment, but I think if they can get a few back for that, they've still got a deeper squad than Newcastle. I think both teams will make changes, but I think home advantage and I think Manchester United will just get through."

Elsewhere, former United star Brown is also predicting three points for Ten Hag's men, telling the Metro: "Tonight’s game against Newcastle is a good game for United.

"This is a game to see where the lads are at and how can we come back from a defeat. Have we the courage to bounce back? We will find a lot out tonight I suppose. I know it is a cup game which takes the sting out of it but we are the title holders and we beat them in the final last year so they will want to get revenge. I am very biased of course and although I do think it will be very tight, I fancy United 1-0 tonight. As a defender, I believe clean sheets are the key."
