Is this the key factor delaying Manchester United pursuit of Rúben Amorim as new boss

Manchester United retain hopeful of appointing Sporting Lisbon boss Rúben Amorim as the new manager at Old Trafford.

Fans are eagerly awaiting developments following the confirmation on Monday lunchtime that Erik ten Hag had been sacked following a disappointing start to the Premier League campaign.

It quickly emerged that Amorim was the leading contender to take charge at Old Trafford, though he himself played down suggestions a deal was imminent on Tuesday evening. One national newspaper has suggested one reason behind why fans may have to be a little patient.

The Guardian report: “Manchester United’s push to appoint Rúben Amorim as their manager is being held up by negotiations with Sporting regarding his 30-day notice period.

“United have informed the Portuguese champions of an intent to pay Amorim’s €10m (£8.3m) release clause and want him in place for Sunday’s visit of Chelsea but this may not be possible unless there is a breakthrough in discussions.”

Amorim - speaking after Sporting’s Portuguese League Cup win over Nacional - said: “Nothing is decided yet. I don’t know if it’s the farewell game or not.” Amorim added in a press conference: “We have to wait a little bit more to explain everything I need to explain and then everything will be very clear. “It’s my decision. I will tell everything so we have to wait. That’s it.”

Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday lunchtime. A club statement read: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”

Former United striker - now coach - Ruud van Nistelrooy has been put in interim charge. United are in Carabao Cup action on Wednesday night, they are at home to Leicester City at Old Trafford.
