Multi-billionaire Elon Musk sent Twitter into meltdown as he tweeted to say he was going to buy Manchester United. The Red Devils have come under a lot of scrutiny over recent days after they dropped to the bottom of the Premier League with two defeats. This has certainly taken the attention away from that, albeit slightly.

Posting on the social media platform that he tried to buy earlier in 2022, Musk put out a political opinion before adding in a comment about United. In his tweet, he said: “To be clear, I support the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party! Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome.”

Was Elon Musk joking or was he being serious? Here’s everything you need to know about the billionaire and the Twitter storm he ensued.

Who is Elon Musk?

Elon Reeve Musk is a South African business tycoon and investor famous for founding the electric car company, Tesla. He’s also the founder, CEO and Chief Engineer at SpaceX, as well as the founder of The Boring Company, and co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI.

Heavily involved in cryptocurrency, Musk has led the way with Bitcoin, Ether and Dogecoin as he reiterated to Bloomberg in 2021 that he owns all three and won’t be selling them. Aged 51, the multi-billionaire has become extremely well known for his jokey antics on social media, particularly on Twitter.

Born into a wealthy family in Pretoria, South Africa, Musk has the business mind in his genes. His father, Errol Musk, is an electromechanical engineer, pilot, sailor and consultant, whereas his mother Maye Musk is a model and dietician.

Is Elon Musk buying Manchester United?

As interesting as it would be to see Twitter’s self-acclaimed ‘meme king’ take over United, it won’t be happening, as Musk revealed himself.

Twitter user @teslaownersSV replied to Musk’s original tweet saying ‘are you serious?’ before Musk then answered his question, stating: “No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams.”

If you wanted Musk to buy United then unfortunately it’s not going to become a reality. For now, anyway.

Ranking third in Forbes’ 2022 Rich List for football clubs, it comes as no surprise that United have both one of the biggest reputations and price tags in the world, with a value of $4.6 billion.

There are no tradable shares at the moment, however, after the club was taken over fully by the Glazer family in 2005. For more information on United’s current financial state, take a look at this Twitter thread by the Swiss Ramble.
