'I'm told' - Fabrizio Romano update as Manchester United 'very close' to transfer agreement for striker

Man Utd have prioritised the addition of a striker in the summer transfer window but it could depend on Champions League qualification.

Manchester United are working on a potential deal to bring Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap to the club in the summer transfer window. Ruben Amorim wants to add a goalscorer to his side at the end of the season, with the 22-year-old viewed as the ideal fit for their style of play.

Delap has a £30 million release clause in his Ipswich contract that has been activated following their Premier League relegation. He scored 12 goals in the top-flight, but it was not enough to keep his side in the division, and he is certain to leave Portman Road after just one season.

United are in competition with Chelsea and Newcastle for his signature, and there have been conflicting reports over the last couple of days about where he might end up playing his football next season. A lot of it could depend on Champions League qualification, with none of the aforementioned clubs certain of it yet.

Fabrizio Romano issues Liam Delap update

Manchester United are in talks to sign Liam Delap this summer, though they will have to convince him of their project amid fierce competition from the likes of Chelsea. It is understood the 22-year-old would like to play Champions League football next season, something United will be able to offer if they win the Europa League final next week.

On Tuesday, Sky Sports News chief reporter, Kaveh Solhekol, issued an update on the deal and even cited one source who claimed a deal for Delap to move to Old Trafford was 'very close.'

“What we are hearing this afternoon is that Manchester United are in pole position to sign him," he said on Sky Sports News. “One source has gone as far as telling us that he believes that the deal is very close and the player would be happy to move to Manchester United. Even though United are not having a great season, he still feels that they are a big, big club."

There is no doubt United have serious interest in the former Manchester City starlet this summer, though transfer guru Fabrizio Romano does not believe a deal is as advanced as others have reported. In his latest GIVEMESPORT newsletter, he wrote: "No decision has been made yet. But Man United are surely in the race. Both clubs have multiple options for striker position, from what I'm told."
