Manchester United won on the final day of the Premier League season, but the win was not enough to save them from their worst Premier League finish.

Ian Wright has defended Erik ten Hag amid Manchester United’s worst-ever Premier League finish. The Red Devils ended the season with a win, ruining Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton farewell, but the win was not enough for United to finish inside the top seven.

There is still a way for United to land European football, with a Europa League spot coming with an FA Cup win, but it looks a tall task for Ten Hag’s men to overcome the reigning Premier League champions at Wembley. Ten Hag remains under serious pressure at Old Trafford, which will come as no surprise given United have finished eighth this season.

But there is also chaos behind the scenes, something new owner Jim Ratcliffe will be aiming to get a hold of over the course of the summer. That’s something pundit Ian Wright has alluded to, telling the BBC: “There is so many things that need to happen at Man Utd. It has been hard for Erik ten Hag as he's not had a settled ship to steer. There are changes that need to be made and the new owners will do that.”

In the meantime, United midfielder Casemiro has hit back at critics, with Jamie Carragher recently claiming the midfielder should finish playing at the top level after this season. The Brazilian has responded by saying on Sky Sports: ”I feel very well, very well. I’m really well, I feel healthy, with energy and the same mentality I always had. I guess people end up talking about the age factor, but it’s been proven. Recently, our friend Thiago Silva, at the age of 39 coming here and showing that, yes, you can play. The previous Ballon d’Or winners were over 34.

“At Man City, there’s Kevin De Bruyne. [Mohamed] Salah at Liverpool. I think age is not an issue, it is not a factor in this, but analysing one’s game and knowing about everything that is happening around the game. These are people who analyse football well, who see what’s happening, who know what’s happening, analysing not the age. But I’m well, I’m happy, living every day I get to play here. As I usually say, Manchester United gave me what I wanted. This joy of being able to enjoy the game, enjoy the Premier League. So, I’m happy to be here at Manchester United and enjoying the game."
