I won the Treble with Manchester United - this is the 'key factor' Ruben Amorim needs to do it too

"That is a key factor and if he does that, you’ll see the players motivated and playing for the badge again."

Manchester United icon Teddy Sheringham believes Ruben Amorim could potentially win three trophies in his debut season at the club, just as he did back in 1999.

Amorim will begin work as the new United head coach next week and will be looking for an immediate improvement in the Premier League, while there will also be a focus on winning his first trophy with the club. Despite their poor start to the new season, United are still only six points behind fourth-place Chelsea in the Premier League, should comfortably qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League and are in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Although they are not in a position to compete for the top prizes just yet, Sheringham doesn't see any reason why they can't win all of their cup competitions this season, as long as Amorim adopts a 'front foot' approach on the pitch.

“Ruben Amorim can make an immediate impact at Manchester United with a style of play that is on the front foot, taking the game to the opposition," he told Flashscore. “You cannot be sitting back at Old Trafford and hoping to hit people on the break, that is just not what the club has been over the past 50 or 60 years, the Busby Babes into Fergie’s era. We're playing for Manchester United. Let the opposition worry about you and we'll see what happens from there. Obviously you have to do your due diligence on opposing teams. But without a doubt, he's got to take the game to the opposition.

“That is a key factor and if he does that, you’ll see the players motivated and playing for the badge again. I think you've got to see a massive improvement and you've got to see an understanding of what he wants to do on the pitch and it will be very evident very early on if he has sparked something, if he has brought enthusiasm. If the players start playing at 100% then you could see him landing a new contract very quickly. Amorim could end up winning three trophies this season and doing well will give him the credibility to push for his own signings in the summer.”
