'He knows' - Manchester United player slammed by Alan Shearer after Arsenal win in FA Cup

Manchester United have been in FA Cup action this weekend

Alan Shearer believes Diogo Dalot can have no complaints about his red card for Manchester United against Arsenal on Sunday evening. The full-back saw red during the second-half at the Emirates Stadium after picking two yellow cards in the third round of the FA Cup tie.

The Red Devils drew 1-1 after normal time before going on to win on penalties. Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring for the visitors before Gabriel equalised for the hosts.

Dalot, who is 25-years-old, was sent off but his teammates got the job done without him in the end. Goalkeeper Altay Bayındır saved a second-half penalty from Martin Odegaard and made some crucial saves to help his team go through.

Shearer, who was on co-commentary duties for BBC, said: “Once he (Dalot) commits to go in for that challenge he’s got to win that ball. He knows what is going to happen if he doesn’t. Even the slightest touch, he’s going over. You can’t really complain with that when you’re on a yellow card. If you’re going to make that challenge, you have to get up and you have to win that ball.”

Speaking after Fernandes’ goal, Shearer said: “What a finish, what a run from (Alejandro) Garnacho down the right hand side. He shows great strength, the pass and the finish. He puts it into his (Fernandes’) path in the hope that he can run on to it and get the connection that he wants. He more than does that. It hits the back of the net with pace and power. What a goal from Man United.

“That is their game plan, to sit and defend and then hit them on the break when they can. That is exactly what they did. Really impressive. They win the header, they get the second ball and Garnacho is away from Gabriel down the right and you’re thinking ‘can he pick the right pass?’ and he certainly did that. What a finish that is. Clinical. Ruthless.”

What next for Manchester United?

United are back in action on Thursday night with a Premier League fixture against Southampton. They are currently sat in 13th place in the table and are looking to rise up the league over the coming weeks and months.

As for the Saints, they are rock bottom and it has been a tough past few months for them. They were promoted from the Championship last year along with Ipswich Town and Leicester City but have struggled to adapt to life back in the top flight.

United dug deep to get their victory at Arsenal and defended very well after going down to 10 men. They will take a lot of confidence from the win and will want to carry the momentum over to their next match.

The fourth round of the FA Cup takes place on the weekend of 8/9th February. The Red Devils last won the competition last year after beating Manchester City in the final.
