Harry Maguire’s future at Manchester United appears to be up in the air with the club ‘chasing’ a new centre-back this summer and him ‘upsetting’ his team-mates, according to reports today.

The Red Devils captain has been a pivotal part of their squad since his arrival from Leicester City in 2019 for £80m, a fee that made him the world’s most expensive defender.

However, the Old Trafford hierarchy are now said to be looking at bringing a ‘world-class’ centre-back to the club this summer as the 28-year-old’s form and leadership have come under scrutiny.

According to the Mail, United are looking at signing a new centre-back in the summer with Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger and option as well as Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo.

The newspaper adds that fellow defenders Eric Bailly and Phil Jones also have ‘uncertain futures’ at the Red Devils.

They also claim that Maguire has ‘upset’ his team-mates this season by ‘blaming them’ for mistakes on the pitch, while his own form hasn’t been spectacular.

This claim has been backed up by the Times, who suggest the Red Devils squad have ‘aired their grievances’ about Maguire’s performances and leadership this campaign, adding the team thought the centre-back’s performances ‘did not meet the club’s standards’.

Last month there were reports that Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo have been ‘rowing’ about the captaincy at Old Trafford; however, United interim manager Ralf Rangnick called the claims ‘nonsense’.

Rangnick has backed his captain since being appointed as interim boss in December, stating the centre-back will ‘stay’ in the role while he is in charge of the club.

“This is absolutely nonsense. I have never spoken to any player about a change in captaincy, Harry is aware of that and Cristiano,” Rangnick said in his pre-match press conference against Leeds United last month.

"I have never spoken with any player about a change of captaincy. This has never been an issue. It is me who decides who is the captain. Harry [Maguire] is our captain and he will stay captain.”
