Harry Maguire discusses Manchester United future as he reveals club’s transfer plans

The Manchester United defender has been the subject of transfer speculation this summer.

Harry Maguire has said he does not expect to leave Manchester United this summer and has been given no indication that he is not part of the club’s future plans.

The defender has been linked with a summer exit as United look to generate funds to complete incoming transfers. With finances tight and the club keeping a watchful eye on their PSR situation, it’s understood Maguire is among several players who are available for transfer if a sufficient offer is received.

However, speaking during the club’s USA tour, Maguire said he expects to remain with United this season.

“Unless the club tell me I’m up for sale or I’m not wanted there anymore [then I’m expecting to stay],” the 31-year-old told Sky Sports.

“Everything I’ve heard and the actions I’ve been shown from the club [say] I’m part of the future and it’s time to crack on and try and make this club successful again and try and compete for the big trophies because that’s what it demands.”

It has been a busy transfer window in the centre-back department this summer, with Raphael Varane and Willy Kambwala departing, Jonny Evans signing a new deal to remain at Old Trafford, and Leny Yoro arriving from Lille.

It means Ten Hag has five defensive options at this stage in Maguire, Yoro, Evans, Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez. But the club would also like to strengthen in that position, with Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs de Ligt among United’s transfer targets.

Maguire could be part of the United team that take on Arsenal in California in the early hours of Sunday morning, although he’s unlikely to start given he is continuing his recovery from the muscular injury that denied him the opportunity to play for England at Euro 2024.

“It was probably the toughest moment in my career to date, really. To get myself into a position where I’d worked hard all season to play in these big games - the cup final - and then to go to the Euros and try and win the tournament for my country...

“I felt like a got myself in a great position physically and mentally to go and perform at the highest level, and then to suffer the setback with the injury, it was really tough.”
