Harry Maguire was a surprise absentee from the Manchester United squad on Sunday for the Premier League clash with Leicester City.

Given the Red Devils’ heavy fixture schedule, the defender could have been in line for a return to team for the visit of his former side, with a starting spot against Barcelona unlikely. But Maguire missed out altogether at Old Trafford on Sunday due to injury.

In his absence, Victor Lindelof was selected to start at centre-back alongside the returning Lisandro Martinez, with Raphael Varane dropping to the bench, presumably with Thursday’s game in mind. Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw started in the full-back areas, with Diogo Dalot and Tyrell Malacia selected on the bench.

Given the lack of options in midfield and attack, it was no surprise to see Marcel Sabitzer and Fred play in the middle, with a front four of Bruno Fernandes, Wout Weghorst, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford selected by Erik ten Hag.

Jadon Sancho was named among the substitutes, as were youngsters Anthony Elanga and Facundo Pellistri. Scott McTominay was also part of a matchday squad for the first time in nearly a month, with the Scotland international struggling with a knock in recent weeks.

As for Maguire, Sunday’s setback is the latest disappointment in an underwhelming campaign. The United captain has fallen behind Varane and Martinez in the pecking order and has played just 19 times this season in all competitions.

But speaking to MUTV before the game, Ten Hag said Maguire’s problem is not serious. Asked if it will keep him out for a long time, the Dutchman replied:"No, I don't think so. We have to wait and see how it develops but I think he will be available again shortly."
