Four candidates under consideration to replace Erik ten Hag as next Manchester United manager
Ruud can Nistelrooy will take temporary charge at Old Trafford - but the search is one for the next permanent boss.
Manchester United are on the lookout for another new manager following the news of Erik ten Hag’s dismissal on Monday morning.
The Dutchman was sacked in the wake of United’s 2-1 defeat at West Ham United, a result that leaves the club 14th in the Premier League table after nine games.
“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” United confirmed in a statement. “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”
Ineos acted swiftly in the wake of Sunday’s defeat with the club’s hierarchy disappointed that results and performances had not seen an upturn since last season, which was the club’s lowest finish in the Premier League era.
For now, Ruud van Nistelrooy will oversee the next few games on an interim basis as the search for a long-term successor begins. In truth, it has been under way for several weeks as Ineos chiefs readied themselves for this eventuality.
ManchesterWorld understands four names are under consideration to replace Ten Hag, with Ruben Amorim a strong contender. His age, ability to work within a club hierarchy and recent track record are seen as attractive qualities for United.
In fact, sources have told ManchesterWorld that Amorim ticks more boxes on Ineos’ checklist than any of the possible candidates. That doesn’t necessarily mean United will approach the Portuguese manager, especially given to complications associated with prising him from Sporting following the recent news of Hugo Viana’s imminent departure.
Thomas Frank is another contender, with the Brentford manager failing to distance himself from reports in a recent interview. Julian Nagelsmann is another name that Old Trafford officials like, albeit he is currently under contract with the German national team.
Ex-Barcelona manager Xavi is the fourth manager ManchesterWorld understands is under consideration. Omar Berrada recently spoke to 44-year-old regarding the possibility of a taking over at Old Trafford, and on Sunday night the former World Cup winner uploaded a photo to social media of his son wearing a United top.
In the meantime, Van Nistelrooy will take charge of the midweek game against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, before the Red Devils host Chelsea on Sunday in the Premier League.
