Dimitar Berbatov has backed Manchester United to edge out Tottenham Hotspur when the two sides go head-to-head tomorrow.

The Red Devils have won just two of their last seven Premier League games and are desperate for three points to kick-start their campaign. Fans hope a win against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup will boost confidence within the camp ahead of a tough test with Spurs.

A 2-0 defeat to Tottenham in August was Ange Postecoglou’s first top-flight win and laid the foundations for a positive season. Despite losing Harry Kane in the summer, Spurs have regrouped and are within touching distance of a Champions League place.

Talk of a title tilt was premature but Tottenham fans are riding a wave of optimism, with Postecoglou helping to lift a dark cloud which engulfed North London. Signing Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner also provides a boost before their trip to Old Trafford.

United know they have a tough game on their hands to stop a first league double for Spurs in 35 years. However, former striker Berbatov, who played for both clubs, is expecting Erik ten Hag’s side to grind out a 1-0 win.

"I know people will ask constantly, 'Who is going to win?' 'Who do you support?': Berbatov told Betfair. “I hope they can really understand that anyone in my position, that when you've played for a couple of teams and when they face each other afterwards, you want both teams to do well.

"You want both teams to get three points, which is impossible. You try to appreciate what both teams are doing on the pitch. If one team is playing badly, and the other team wins, then of course you admit that the winning team was better.

"I can see this being a tight game and I'm going to say it will be 1-0 to United. It sounds boring, but I hope that's not the case. I think there's a lot at stake for both teams. That can sometimes play with your mind and make you not produce your best game possible."
