Former Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze could link up with Arsenal as a member of their backroom staff, according to reporter Leandro Alves on X

The 45-year-old, who retired back in 2014, has emerged as a potential addition for the Gunners as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his coaching team. The London club are currently battling Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title. United signed Heinze in 2004 after he had spells at Newell’s Old Boys, Real Vallodolid and PSG. He went on to spend three years at Old Trafford.

The ex-defender, who earned 72 caps for Argentina, made 83 appearances for the Red Devils under Sir Alex Ferguson during his time on the books there, chipping in with three goals from the back.

He helped United win the title in his last year. Real Madrid then lured him away from England and he ended his playing days after stints at Marseille, Roma and boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys.

Heinz has delved into the managerial world since hanging up his boots and has had spells at Godoy Cruz, Argentinos Juniors, Vélez Sarsfield, Atlanta United and most recently with Newell’s Old Boys.

He left the latter last year and has since been out of the dugout. However, a surprise return to England may well be on the cards for him now with Arsenal linked with a potential swoop.

The Gunners lost 2-0 at home to Aston Villa over the weekend in a big boost to City’s hopes of winning the title again. Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins scored two late goals at the Emirates Stadium as Unai Emery guided the Midlands outfit to a win against his former employers.

Meanwhile, United drew 2-2 away at AFC Bournemouth as they now set their sights on the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City on Sunday.
