Former Man Utd boss linked with Sunderland job after Roy Keane links

A former Manchester United boss is being linked with a Championship job after time out of the game. Tom Cleverly became the latest former Red Devil to get a managerial gig, taking over Watford on an interim basis, and joining Michael Carrick in the Championship, and the list could keep growing.

Sunderland are currently looking for a new manager, although they are taking their time after sacking two managers this season in Tony Mowbray and Michael Beale. Mike Dodds is currently in charge on an interim basis and he will remain in the position until the end of the season, with the Black Cats likely having to accept a mid-table finish.

With the Black Cats taking a cautious approach, plenty of names are being linked with the job, and the favourite remains United legend Roy Keane, who enjoyed a successful period in charge of the club between 2006 and 2008, taking them from the Championship to the Premier League.

But Keane isn't the only former United man in the frame. Behind Will Still, the popular Reims boss, in the favourites is ex-United forward and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Norwegian has been out of management since leaving the Red Devils after three years in 2021. Solskjaer did not win any silverware during his time at the club. He arrived after two spells with home country club Molde either side of a failed stint in charge of Cardiff City when he oversaw the Bluebirds' relegation from the top flight.

Solskjaer also oversaw a disappointing start to the following season with Cardiff, leaving them 17th, and that was his old taste of Championship management, something Sunderland may pay close attention to. Elsewhere, Steve Cooper, Scott Parker and Frank Lampard are said to be alternative candidates for the role at the Stadium of Light.
