Cristiano Ronaldo has invariably dominated the sporting headlines over the past two weeks - but it’s easy to forget with all the hype around his potential return on Saturday, there’s plenty more to look out for in Manchester United v Newcastle United.

Sancho in contention

The England winger was sent home early from international duty with a slight knock, but is expected to be fit for this weekend’s game. Sancho was pictured training during the week and could start his first home match as a United player.

Varane the man

Another summer signing who could feature against the Magpies is Raphael Varane. It seems like a long time ago he was paraded on the pitch ahead of the Leeds United game, and Saturday will likely mark his first Old Trafford appearance, following an excellent debut away at Wolverhampton Wanderers prior to the international break.

Midfield dilemma

While Sancho and Varane are expected to be involved, there’s less certainty with Fred as he is one of eight Brazilian players who could be ineligible for this weekend’s Premier League games. His potential absence, coupled with that of Scott McTominay, means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be light of midfield options and will most likely select Nemanja Matic and Paul in the centre of the park.

Greenwood out to make history

The young attacker has scored in each of the Red Devils’ opening three league games and could make it four when he faces Steve Bruce’s men. Should he find the back of the net, he’ll become just the fourth teenager to score in four consecutive Premier League games after Robbie Fowler, Nicolas Anelka and Francis Jeffers.

Covid spot checks

In line with other Premier League games this weekend, Saturday’s match will see Covid certification spot checks at Old Trafford. Supporters attending the game may be asked to prove they are fully vaccinated or have received a negative test result in the last 48 hours.

Other Reds to return

Dean Henderson has been spotted back in training this week and could be involved in the matchday squad after suffering from the long-term effects of Covid-19. Edinson Cavani played his first minutes of the season against Wolves and may be in line for a starting berth if Ronaldo doesn’t begin the match. Jesse Lingard hasn’t played for United since returning from West Ham United on loan in the summer and is an option for Solskjaer on Saturday.
