Manchester United’s Raphael Varane recorded the highest points in gameweek one of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

The Red Devils underwhelmed in their first showing of the new season and were fortunate to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Old Trafford on Monday night, in the last match of the opening weekend.

It was Varane who popped up with the all-important goal for United on 76 minutes, to ensure Erik ten Hag’s side began the new campaign with three points. The goal also earned Varane a few points in fantasy football, with the Frenchman earning six for the goal, in addition to four for a clean sheet. Varane also picked up a two-point bonus, in addition to the regulation two awarded for playing 90 minutes.

That brought Varane’s total up 14 for gameweek one, the highest of any Premier League player in FPL. Despite that, the centre-back was only selected by three percent of fans in the game.

Varane’s high-score of 14 just beat the 13 earned by Manchester City duo Rodri and Erling Haaland, who were both on target in the 3-0 win over Burnley on Friday night. Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak also picked up 13 points for his brace against Aston Villa in the opening weekend.

Another United player scored highly for his display against Wolves, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka earned 12 points thanks to the assist he provided for Varane. The Red Devils duo were one of nine players to score double figures in gameweek one, along with Bernd Leno (12), Axel Disasi (11), Harvey Barnes (11) and Bukayo Saka (10).
