Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United 'monitoring' midfielder who was 'impossible' to sign in the summer

The latest Man Utd transfer news and gossip as they look to sign a midfielder this summer.

Manchester United are keeping tabs on several midfielders as they look to overhaul the position in the transfer market next year. Ruben Amorim would like to have signed a midfielder this summer, though club sources insisted it was never a 'priority' after they overhauled their attacking options instead.

United enquired to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton, and there were also talks over a potential loan move for Atletico Madrid ace Conor Gallagher. Amorim has a preference to sign a Premier League-proven talent in that position as well, with Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest gem Elliot Anderson both expected to be on their list next year.

They won't be the only players considered, though and United will also look further afield as they attempt to get their best value for money in the market. They might find that in a move for Bundesliga star Angelo Stiller.

United monitoring Stiller

Manchester United were linked with a move for Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller in the summer transfer window, though the Bundesliga club made it clear he was not for sale. A report this week claimed he could be available for €50 million (£43.45m) next year, with United still keeping an eye on the 24-year-old.

Speaking in his latest YouTube video, notorious transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano claimed: “I want to touch also on the Premier League now, on some midfielders. Because I'm always receiving many questions on Angelo Stiller, there was a report from Bild in the last few days on Manchester United tracking the player. Manchester United have always been following this player. Angelo Stiller is really appreciated internally at Manchester United.

“Last summer, we had some stories about Man United going on a mission to Germany negotiating to sign Stiller as a surprise for the final weeks. No, Man United never started any negotiations for Angelo Stiller in August last summer. That was never a possibility. It was always impossible.

“Stiller was always going to stay at Stuttgart in the summer transfer window, especially in August, so there was no chance to change the story in the final days of the window. But Angelo still remains a player monitored by Manchester United. They are following him. They are closely monitoring his progress. Again, at the moment, there is no negotiation, no talks.”

United target two midfielders

Manchester United could be in the market for at least two midfielders next year due to various factors. There is already a desire to secure a statement signing in the position, with the likes of Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson all in that bracket.

They could also look to add another player, at least, to their squad, amid doubts over every midfielder already at the club. Bruno Fernandes remains a target for Saudi Arabian clubs, Casemiro is out of contract at the end of the campaign and Kobbie Mainoo is unhappy with his lack of playing time. Manuel Ugarte has struggled since he moved to Manchester last year.

There is hope Toby Collyer or Sekou Kone could step up to occupy one of those positions, while United have already reached an agreement to sign Colombian teenager Cristian Orozco.
