Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United in transfer U-turn with 'very important' player

Manchester United have until the end of the window to conclude any incoming or outgoing bits of business

Casemiro is poised to stay at Manchester United this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. The midfielder’s future at Old Trafford has been uncertain for a while in this transfer window but it appears he is expected to remain where he is.

The Brazil international, who is 32-years-old, started for the Red Devils in their opening day 1-0 win over Fulham in the Premier League last Friday. New striker Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench to score the winner against the Whites.

Journalist Romano has shared this update regarding Casemiro’s situation at United in his Daily Briefing: “Casemiro was on the market … this summer and there was interest from Al Ittihad, but then their president resigned and everything they changed and they didn’t go for Casemiro. It now seems like the Brazilian midfielder is staying at Old Trafford.”

Erik ten Hag heaped praise on who he described as a ‘very important’ player after their victory over Fulham and said: “He was absolutely (cool on the ball), in that midfield department, unit, he was very important. In possession, out of possession, organising, interceptions, duels. On the ball; smart solutions, as we know him. So yeah, this is the Casemiro we all enjoy."

Casemiro is a useful player for United to have in and around the dressing room. His experience comes in handy for some of the club’s younger players and he provides more competition and depth to their squad.

Letting him go would have freed up and space in their ranks to pave the way for new arrivals. However, it won’t be a bad thing if he stays for another 12 months and the fact he started in their latest fixture suggests he is still firmly in their plans.

He has recently joined the board of directors at ambitious Spanish four tier outfit Marbella. They announced: “The enthusiasm and commitment that Casemiro shows with the Marbella project is evident with his incorporation into the club’s shareholding structure. The confirmation of Casemiro as a new member of the board of directors is an historic opportunity for the club to continue projecting its institutional and sporting strategy in elite football.”

Casemiro added: “It is an honour for me to join Marbella because my greatest motivation is the spectacular growth possibilities of the club. Without a doubt, together we will dream big to take Marbella to the top, but now we have to enjoy our wonderful promotion.”

United signed him back in 2022 and he has since made 85 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with 12 goals. He has helped them win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup since his move and he will be eager for some success in the league next.

Prior to his switch to England, he spent 10 years at Real Madrid and played 336 games for the La Liga giants, finding the net on 31 occasions, as well as having a loan spell away at FC Porto to get some minutes. He rose up through the academy ranks of Sao Paulo in his native Brazil before moving over to Europe.
