Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United in 'active talks' to trigger release clause and secure huge summer signing

Man Utd will look to add attacking talent to their squad in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United will look to sign Matheus Cunha this summer regardless of whether or not they win the Europa League and qualify for the Champions League. United originally budgeted for next season on the expectation they would not play European football but are now just one win away from a remarkable qualification and the huge financial incentive that comes along with it.

It means United could alter their summer plans if they end up in the Champions League, though it is not expected to impact their pursuit of Wolves star Cunha. Ruben Amorim has prioritised the addition of an attacking midfielder to his squad and the 25-year-old has been identified as their preferred target for the role.

Cunha has a £62.5 million release clause in his Wolves deal and United know it would be a rather straightforward transfer to complete, given he is open to an Old Trafford move this summer.

Fabrizio Romano issues Matheus Cunha update

Manchester United are making progress over a move for Matheus Cunha, though some supporters won't believe the interest until they see Fabrizio Romano utter his infamous 'here we go' catchphrase to indicate a deal is all but done. United are in talks with Cunha over personal terms, while they would also like to discuss the structure of paying his £62.5 million release clause to Wolves.

"My understanding is that the conversations remain absolutely ongoing between Man United and Matheus Cunha, between the player and the club over the terms of the contract," Romano told CaughtOffside. "So, it remains ongoing, and Man United are also aware of the situation at Wolves – they know that the club want Cunha’s full release clause to be paid.

"The clause is £62.5m, and I’m told that Man United would ideally like to reschedule the payment terms. This would be an important point of the conversation, in order to find also a way to make it work with Financial Fair Play. But Cunha remains an important target for Man United this summer, with talks and negotiations ongoing over the contract details.

"So, let’s see how the next steps and stages of the story will go, but for sure United remain in active talks to sign Cunha for the summer transfer window."
