Fabrizio Romano: Former Man United midfielder 'will 100% leave' this summer amid Old Trafford return reports

Man Utd could consider free agent moves in the summer amid a tight financial situation.

Fabrizio Romano says former Manchester United academy star Angel Gomes is 'certain' to find a new club in the summer transfer window as he approaches the end of his contract with Lille.

The 24-year-old is set to become a free agent when his current deal expires at the end of the season, and he has been linked with a sensational return to Old Trafford in the summer.

United are currently budgeting without European football for next season and are well aware they might need to consider free-agent additions amid their tight financial situation. Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton are all expected to leave when their contracts expire this summer, but United's summer budget will likely be dictated by whether they manage to sell the likes of Marcus Rashford, Antony and Casemiro.

Angel Gomes ‘certain’ to move this summer

Manchester United are prioritising the addition of a striker this summer but are also set to be in the market for at least one midfielder. It makes a return for Angel Gomes a compelling prospect, given his ability to play in both a central and an attacking role. The 24-year-old has only netted two goals and registered one assist in 20 appearances this season but is still expected to attract plenty of interest in the summer. He made four appearances for England under interim head coach Lee Carsley and grabbed an assist in a Nations League win over Greece when playing in a defensive midfield role.

Writing in his latest newsletter, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano issued an update on the future of Gomes and said there is interest from the Premier League as well as the Bundesliga in his signature. "Yes, Premier League is a possibility for Angel Gomes while also clubs in the Bundesliga asked for information to his new agents. He will 100% leave Lille," he said.

The same outlet have previously linked United, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Aston Villa with a summer move for Gomes and say Spurs have previously struggled to agree a pre-contract agreement with the Carrington academy graduate.

Gomes joined United at the age of six back in 2006, but he only played 46 minutes in the Premier League before he rejected a new contract and joined Lille five years ago.
