Manchester United could meet a familiar face later in the season after a former Red Devils favourite reportedly signalled his intention to return to the Premier League.

David de Gea brought an end to his 12-year stay at Old Trafford during the summer after making over 540 appearances for the club following a £20m move from La Liga club Atletico Madrid.  The former Spain international was a regular feature in United sides during that time as he became a Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League winner.

However, after failing to come to an agreement over a new deal, De Gea departed when his contract came to an end in June and remains without a club, despite reportedly receiving offers from clubs in Spain and Saudi Arabia.

The latest club to be linked with a move for De Gea is Newcastle United as the Magpies face up to life without regular number one Nick Pope after he suffered a serious shoulder injury in their recent 1-0 win against Erik ten Hag’s side. Pope is expected to remain on the sidelines for the vast majority of the remainder of the season and there are now some doubts of the fitness of his replacement, former Red Devils loan signing Martin Dubravka.

The Magpies have been linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur veteran Hugo Lloris and Arsenal stopper Aaron Ramsdale - but a move for De Gea is said to be on the agenda as the former Spain international reportedly eyes a return to the Premier League.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has suggested De Gea is ‘waiting for a call’ from Newcastle and ‘would love to sign’ for the Magpies if an offer is received.

Speaking to Kick, he said: “I saw one about Newcastle’s goalkeepers. Newcastle are considering options for a new goalkeeper. Newcastle have been unlucky with injuries. Nick Pope is injured, but also Dubravka isn’t 100% fit. De Gea is waiting, De Gea would love to sign for Newcastle, De Gea is just waiting for a call.”

If a deal is concluded, De Gea could return to Old Trafford for the first time since his departure when his former club host Newcastle in April.
