Twelve Manchester United players have so far been called up to World Cup squads ahead of the tournament in Qatar starting next week.

The competition begins next Sunday and teams’ rosters have started to emerge ahead of the competition. Around half of the senior United squad will be involved with their respective international teams at the World Cup, and three United stars featured in Gareth Southgate’s England selection on Thursday. Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford were called up by the Three Lions, although Dean Henderson and Jadon Sancho missed out.

Elsewhere, four Red Devils featured in the Brazil squad, with Fred, Casemiro and Antony joined by on-loan Sevilla player Alex Telles in the Selecao group that will fly to Qatar. Portugal’s team is also heavily made up of United players - Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo were named in Fernando Santos’ team.

Raphael Varane hasn’t played at club level since 22 October, but could win a second World Cup with France next month. He’s joined by Presnel Kimpembe, Ibrahima Konate, Jules Kounde, William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano as competition at the heart of defence for Les Bleus. However, Anthony Martial has been excluded from the roster after an injury-plagued start to the campaign.

Christian Eriksen has also been selected to play at the World Cup and it could be an emotional occasion for the player and his international team-mates following Eriksen’s cardiac arrest at the Euros last year.

On Friday, Lisandro Martinez’s name was included in Argentina’s squad, while Facundo Pellistri was also called up by Uruguay despite not yet playing a senior minute for United. Tyrell Malacia is another Red Devil who will be in Qatar, as Louis Van Gaal selected him for the Netherlands, but unsurprisingly left out Donny van de Beek
