The Toffees have submitted a loan bid with an obligation to buy to Juventus who are hoping to strike an agreement worth around £30m once the loan fee and obligation to buy are factored in.
That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, who name Aston Villa and West Ham United as other interested clubs. The Red Devils have been linked too, with previous reports indicating Juventus were willing to offer Luiz as part of a swap deal for Jadon Sancho.
A more recent report from Give Me Sport has named Ruben Amorim’s side as still interested in Luiz. The player is said to be ready to leave Juventus and play in England and “is not considered a key part of the club’s plans, and a transfer is expected this summer.”
Why Douglas Luiz is up for sale
The 27-year-old has had a positive experience in the Premier League already after spending five years with Aston Villa between 2019 and 2024. He was brought to England by Manchester City in 2017 but never made a senior appearance for the side.
He spent two season on loan at Spanish side Girona, who are also owned by City Football Group after he was initially not granted a work permit to play in England.
His performances with Villa earned him a £42.5m switch to Juve last summer but it has not gone to plan for the Brazilian in Italy. He came off the bench in just one of the club’s games at the Club World Cup and did not feature in their other three games.
He only made 19 appearances in Serie A, totalling 516 minutes. A return to the Premier League could be just what he needs to avoid his career from petering out.
Unai Emery highlights Douglas Luiz’s strong attributes
Speaking about the player in April 2024, just a few months before he left Villa, Unai Emery said of Luiz: "He is a player who has always had a good instinct to get into the box.
"He is scoring goals because his instinct is very good. He is feeling comfortable getting into the opposition box when we are in the attacking third."
He added, in the interview with Sky Sports: "Of course, we are trying to use the structure to get him into the best position. It is about trying to adapt him to our structure and for him to feel comfortable in our structure. It is not only about our structure and it is not only about him. It is a mix of both."
United have let Christian Eriksen go following the conclusion of his contract while Casemiro has just one year left on his deal at Old Trafford and is unlikely to be handed a new deal. Luiz is proven at Premier League level and at the age of 27 could prove a solid addition to United’s midfield for the coming years.
