Erik ten Hag could hire Steve McClaren as his assistant if the former is appointed Manchester United’s next manager, according to reports.

The latter is no stranger to the Red Devils having been in the same role under Sir Alex Ferguson between 1999 and 2001.

Now the Guardian reports Ten Hag could look to bring McClaren back to Old Trafford this summer if the Dutchman is given the role.

United have failed to win the league title since Ferguson left the club, but will be hoping their next managerial appointment can bring that to an end.

McClaren, while working under Ferguson in 1999, helped guide the Red Devils to the treble.

The former England boss has worked with Ten Hag before. During his time in charge of FC Twente, the latter worked as McClaren’s assistant for the 2008-09 season.

Now the roles could be reversed with the newspaper adding that due to McClaren’s experience in the Premier League, he would make an ‘ideal’ assistant to Ten Hag.

The news comes at an interesting time, especially with McClaren’s recent comments on Ten Hag’s coaching style.

McClaren compared the Dutchman’s attention to details to that of Ferguson’s and dubbed Ten Hag as ‘tactically outstanding’.

Ten Hag is currently the bookies’ favourite to take over at United and has guided Ajax to two league titles and Dutch Cups, as well as to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019.

However, the Dutchman isn’t the only name being considered for the role, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauricio Pochettino, Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui and Spain manager Luis Enrique making up the shortlist, as per Sky Sports.

The Red Devils currently sit seventh in the league and have eight games remaining this season in order to achieve their target of a top four finish.
