Erik ten Hag has given an update on several key talking points in his first press conference as Manchester United manager, including Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with the club.

The Dutchman, who joined the club from Ajax in May, will take charge of his first game against Liverpool in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday, but will be without Ronaldo for their tour of Thailand and Australia.

United will play four games in both nations before taking on Atletico Madrid on July 30 in Oslo and Rayo Vallecano the following day at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo, who rejoined the Red Devils from Juventus last summer, is reportedly looking to leave the club after their poor performance last season, which saw them fail to secure a Champions League spot.

However, Ten Hag has shut down those rumours and has outlined his plans to work with the Portuguese international next season.

Ronaldo’s future

Speaking to the media in Bangkok, Ten Hag said: "He [Ronaldo] is not with us due to personal issues. We are planning with Cristiano Ronaldo for this season. That is it.

"I am looking forward to working with him. Cristiano is not for sale. He is in our plans. We want success together."

United captaincy

Ronaldo’s future wasn’t the only topic of discussion in the press conference, with the subject of who will be captain under Ten Hag also brought up.

Harry Maguire, who was criticised for his poor performances and leadership skills last campaign, currently wears the armband and will remain in that role under his new boss.

"Harry Maguire will be captain," Ten Hag said.

"He has been captain for more than a year. He has achieved a lot of success. I have no doubts about this issue."

United have made only one signing so far this summer with Tyrell Malacia joining from Feyenoord for £15m last week.

Several well-established names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, including Frenkie de Jong, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez, but Ten Hag has emphasised he only wants the ‘right players’ to fit his style at the club.

"We want to add the right players,” he said

“We have a really good squad, we are working to develop our way of playing and [if] the opportunity is there and we will strike.”
