A new contract for the Dutchman has been the priority for the club ever since they decided to keep him in the role following their extensive end-of-season review.

It is understood Ten Hag's contract extension will see him remain on the existing terms of his previous deal, with the only change that he is now contracted for the next two years, rather than just one more season.

United believe Ten Hag will benefit greatly from the increased support from the strengthened leadership team at the club, while discussions are also ongoing to refresh the club's coaching staff. The expectation is both Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake will join as assistants, while Mitchell van der Gaag will leave the club after two years.

Speaking after the deal was confirmed, Ten Hag spoke of his delight but also outlined the long-term ambition to win both the Premier League and European titles.

“I am very pleased to have reached agreement with the club to continue working together," he said. "Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined.

"However, we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead to reach the levels expected of Manchester United, which means challenging for English and European titles. In my discussions with the club, we have found complete unity in our vision for reaching those goals, and we are all strongly committed to making that journey together.”
