'I go somewhere else' - Erik ten Hag issues defiant response to Manchester United sacking suggestion

Erik ten Hag’s future is still unclear after Man Utd defeated Manchester City to win the FA Cup

Erik ten Hag has told Manchester United bosses that if they don't want him then he will go elsewhere and be successful anyway.

The Dutchman secured his second trophy in two seasons in charge of United as they defeated Man City 2-1 in the FA Cup final on Saturday afternoon. Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo gave United a deserved lead for much of the match, before Jeremy Doku set up a frantic finale with a low driven effort in the last few minutes of normal time.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe congratulated United on their Wembley victory shortly afterwards, but did not give any mention of the first-team manager after he delivered another piece of silverware and European qualification.

It remains to be seen what will happen next with Ten Hag after a report on the eve of the match suggested he would be sacked regardless of the outcome of the FA Cup win. United sources insisted that a decision was yet to be made on the Dutchman and that his future would only be determined after a full review of their season once it was completed.

Speaking after the game, Ten Hag insisted his side was making progress and warned that if United chiefs didn't want him, then he would go elsewhere and be successful anyway.

"I don’t think about this," he said in his post-match press conference when quizzed on his possible sacking. "I am in a project and we are exactly where we want to be, we are constructing a team for the future, When I took over we were in a mess. The team is developing, the team is winning and the team plays to an identity but you need the players to be available and a a strong squad especially when you play in England and Europe. There is a lot of work to do but we have value in the squad, high potentials, the team is progressing and we are winning trophies. Two trophies in two years is not bad, three finals in two years is not bad. If they don’t want me, then I go somewhere else to win trophies because that is what I do."
