Erik ten Hag has revealed Anthony Martial sustained a new injury in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Everton, not a recurrence of an old problem.

The striker was forced to come off just before the half-hour mark at Goodison Park on Sunday and his movements were laboured during the opening stages of the game.

Martial was starting his first game of the 2022/23 season after his start to the campaign was impacted by a hamstring issue. Martial recovered from that injury and played in the 2-1 win against Liverpool in August, before picking up an Achilles problem which forced him to miss seven matches.

But speaking after Sunday’s victory against Everton, Ten Hag said the injury that forced him off is an entirely new problem altogether.

“No, I don’t think so,” he told BT Sport. “It’s something different. A problem in his back. But he was important; an assist on the goal for Antony so I’m happy with that.”

Speaking separately in the post-match press conference, Ten Hag revealed he is unsure how serious Martial’s injury is. “I have to see, I cannot tell what it is, how serious it is. Let’s wait for the first 24 hours and then I can give an answer,” said the former Ajax boss.

Martial’s injury issues have limited him to just 100 minutes of Premier League football this campaign, from which he’s scored two and produced two assists.

The 26-year-old set up Antony for United’s equaliser at Goodison Park, which proved to be a turning point in the game. From then on, United were in the ascendancy, and went on to take all three points.

Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed the winner just before the break when he smashed a left-footed effort past Jordan Pickford at his near post. That was his first league goal of the campaign and the 700th club goal of his distinguished career.

The win moves United up to fifth in the table and they’re now just a point behind fourth-place Chelsea. Next up for the Red Devils in the league is a home clash with Newcastle United next Sunday.
