Erik ten Hag gives verdict on forgotten star's new Manchester United role

Man Utd fielded a makeshift defence in their Community Shield penalty shootout defeat to Manchester City.

Erik ten Hag says he was 'pleased' with Facundo Pellistri's contribution as a makeshift right-back in the Community Shield penalty shootout defeat to Man City.

United were boosted by the return of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans at centre-back for the Wembley showdown, while Diogo Dalot started at right-back and Lisandro Martinez was deployed in the left-back role.

As the game went on, Martinez replaced Maguire in a central role, with Dalot moved to the other full-back position and winger Pellistri brought on to play at right-back amid a lack of other options.

United are set to sign Noussair Mazraoui after agreeing to sell Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham, meaning we are unlikely to see Pellistri deployed in a defensive role again anytime soon.

The Uruguayan was criticised when he switched off for Bernardo Silva's late equalising goal but Ten Hag insists he was happy with what he saw from all his full-backs in the match.

Asked why teenager Harry Amass was not involved in the Community Shield clash, he said: "I think we had some seniority there. To start, I think that was the idea, we had a plan how to deal with it and I think also that went how we thought. I think all the full backs, although not all were full backs, like Licha, he did good as a full back. Diogo is the full back and Facundo did well as the full back. We are pleased with those performances."
