Some of those revolve around Manchester United and Manchester City stars. One of the big debates comes in midfield and who might partner Declan Rice with Kobbie Mainoo’s rise last season having thrust him right into contention.
Luke Shaw is in the squad as the only natural left back but has not played since February so it is not clear when he will be fit to start. John Stones has also been in and out of training in the run up to the opening game.
Then there is the question of Phil Foden and where exactly he might line up in Southgate’s set-up as he tries to fit in Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and maybe even former City man Cole Palmer after his stunning season at Chelsea.
Based on recent reports and what Southgate has said in the build-up, here is how England could line-up against Serbia in Group C on Sunday night.
