England boss Gareth Southgate reveals injury update for key Man Utd defender

The latest Manchester United team and injury news

England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed a fitness update for Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw.

Southgate has revealed Shaw is facing a race against time to be fit for Euro 2024 this summer, with the defender ruled out for an extended period of time. The 28-year-old is out with a muscle injury. He limped off in last month’s win at Luton Town in the Premier League.

United boss Erik ten Hag is not expecting him back until May and now England boss Southgate has provided a further update at his press conference today. England face Brazil and Belgium over the next fortnight.

“Well, we’d have to say yes is the answer to that because the timelines would suggest he will only be available in the dying embers of the season. You don’t know what version of the player you’re going to get," said Southgate.

“Clearly going into a seven-game tournament… one of the great things we’ve been able to learn in two of the three tournaments we’ve played in, we’ve played all seven matches and the physical demands that that brings are notable. We might have everybody that’s currently injured back and available but how fit and how match fit and how robust to get through a tournament, we’re going to have to work that out as well in the next few months," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.
