Billionaire Elon Musk would love to buy Man Utd and Man City’s Premier League rivals Liverpool, his father has claimed

Billionaire Elon Musk would like to buy Manchester United and Manchester City’s Premier League rivals Liverpool, his father has claimed but has insisted that doesn’t mean any form of takeover is in the offing.

Liverpool have been owned by Fenway Sports Group since 2010, when the American investment group purchased the club for around £300m. In May, Liverpool were ranked as the fourth most valuable club in the world by Forbes with a value of $5.37bn. United were second with $6.55bn with Real Madrid ranked first with a value of $6.6bn. City were in fifth behind Liverpool while Barcelona made up the top five.

Musk’s father, Errol Musk was asked by Times Radio if his son was looking at buying United and City’s rivals. He replied: “I can’t comment on that. They’ll raise the price.” Pushed on if Musk would want to buy the club, his father said: “Oh, yes. But that doesn’t mean he’s buying it. He would like to yes, obviously. Anybody would want to – so would I. His grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives in Liverpool, and we were fortunate to know quite a lot of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family. So, we are attached to Liverpool, you know."

Sky Sports have reported that FSG have insisted the club is not for sale and that they have not received any offers from Musk.

Elon Musk net worth

Musk is the world’s richest man, with an estimated net worth of $421bn. He is the founder and CEO of Space X, CEO of Tesla and owner of X, formerly known as Twitter. The businessman became the first person in history to surpass a net worth of $400bn.

Although no takeover appears to be in the pipeline on Merseyside, investment from Musk would likely increase Liverpool’s spending power in the transfer market. However, they would still be required to work within financial regulations set out by the Premier League and UEFA if that scenario ever came to fruition.

Man Utd and Man City owners net worth

United’s owners have a combined net worth of around $25.6bn. $10bn of that belongs to the Glazer family with the rest estimated to be the wealth of minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The British billionaire purchased a 27.7% stake in Manchester United through his Ineos conglomerate almost 12 months ago. The deal was worth a reported £1.25bn.

"To become co-owner of Manchester United is a great honour and comes with great responsibility," said Ratcliffe at the time. "This marks the completion of the transaction, but just the beginning of our journey to take Manchester United back to the top of English, European and world football, with world-class facilities for our fans. Work to achieve those objectives will accelerate from today."

City are owned by City Football Group Limited, who own 13 football clubs across the world. According to the City Football Group website they are “majority owned by Newton Investment and Development LLC, fully owned by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.” Sheikh Mansour is a member of the Abu Dhabi Royal Family and his net worth is reported to be $30bn.
