Eddie Howe has confirmed none of his injured Newcastle United players will be back in time for Wednesday’s trip to Manchester United.

The sides meet at Old Trafford in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, a repeat of last season’s Wembley final. Both sides have no shortage of injuries at present, with seven apiece out for the two Uniteds.

The Magpies were without Javier Manquillo, Sven Botman, Lewis Miley, Elliot Anderson, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak for Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers, along with the suspended Sandro Tonali, who won't play again this season.

Speaking on Tuesday morning, Howe revealed there are no major updates with his squad ahead of the trip to Manchester. “I don’t think we’re expecting anyone who wasn’t available before Wolves to be available now,” the ex-Bournemouth manager said.

“The majority are longer term, unfortunately for us, that’s the position we’re in so we’ll go with a very similar squad.”

The number of injuries is stretching Howe’s squad thin, especially with the additional requirements of European football this season, and the Newcastle boss hinted he could rotate his squad in Wednesday’s game.

“We’ll be juggling minutes and trying to make sure we are very competitive. We want to try and compete in every game but make sure when players enter the pitch they’re able to give their best.”

Howe said something similar on Saturday after the draw at Molineux: “I think in this next game that’s going to be a bit of a juggling act but we do have the players who can play different positions. It’s one of the strengths of our squad so we’re certainly going to utilise that.

“I think we’ve got to be very careful with the team selection, we’ve got to try and get that right. We’re very, very thin on the ground in certain areas.”

Newcastle named a bench with two goalkeepers on Saturday, as well as six players who can play in defence. The likes of Martin Dubravka, Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall, Matt Ritchie and Joe Willock could be handed starts in Wednesday's Carabao Cup encounter.
