Newcastle United are reportedly considering a move for former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.

The Magpies could be in the market for a new no.1 following Nick Pope’s injury in the latter stages of Saturday’s 1-0 win at St James’ Park, which ironically came against Erik ten Hag’s side. Pope dived to save a Sergio Reguilon shot and immediately signalled he had sustained a serious injury.

The ex-Burnley stopper was replaced by Martin Dubravka and reports have suggested that Pope may have dislocated his shoulder and could be out for around five months. If so, that could mean the 31-year-old’s season is all but over.

If so, that could mean the 31-year-old’s season is all but over. Newcastle may consider a replacement for Pope and, as per the Daily Mail, are weighing up a move for De Gea. The outlet claim he is ‘one potential option Newcastle have looked at’, but the Spaniard would have to accept a lower salary than the £375,000-per-week wages he was on at Old Trafford. “He would have obvious appeal given his pedigree, immediate availability and the fact he would not require a transfer fee,” the Mail add. De Gea left United last summer following 12 years as the club’s no.1, and has been back in Manchester since, posting images on social media with Reguilon on separate occasions, while he also met up with several team-mates in a Manchester restaurant. The 33-year-old also attracted interest from Real Madrid after Thibaut Courtois suffered an ACL injury last summer. In the meantime, Dubravka is expected to start for Newcastle when they face Everton on Thursday.
