David de Gea has said his contract negotiations with Manchester United will ‘end in a good way’.

The goalkeeper’s current deal is set to expire this summer, although United could exercise the option to extend his contract by a further 12 months. But De Gea’s recent comments suggest he is close to agreeing a new long-term deal with the club. “We’re still talking,” the Spaniard said after Saturday’s win over Crystal Palace. “I’m just focused on the game, that’s the most important thing, but for sure it’s going to end in a good way.”

De Gea is currently enjoying his 12th season at Old Trafford and, despite the odd hiccup, has had another impressive campaign with the Red Devils. His form and positive comments from manager Erik ten Hag have all but banished any suggestions he could leave the club for free this summer, as was reported by the Sun in December.

"I am really happy with David, he is a great goalkeeper,” Ten Hag said earlier this season. “He is only 31, he is fit, he can progress even more. He was already impressive for Man United and will be in the future as well."

De Gea played well again on Saturday as United held on to beat Palace 2-1 thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford. But it was a tense end as the Eagles pushed for an equaliser, with Patrick Vieira’s men buoyed by a man advantage following Casemiro’s red card.

De Gea produced a smart save to keep out Marc Guehi’s header and felt it was an important win as the Red Devils moved closer to Arsenal at the top of the table. “It was a massive, massive three points,” he said. The way the game finished at the end, it feels even better when you win the game.

“The team spirit is great from everyone, everyone fights until the end, and everyone is ready from the bench to perform well. It’s great to watch the team playing and performing well.”

Next up for Ten Hag’s side is a double header against Leeds United in the Premier League. “Of course, it’s a massive game, we have to recover well now because we did an extra effort today at the end,” claimed De Gea.

“Again, game on Wednesday, game on Sunday, it’s not easy, we have to be very focused. It’s a special game always against Leeds. Let’s see, we have some days to prepare the game properly, recovery, and go again.”
