David Beckham could be set to land a role at Manchester United more than 20 years after leaving the club. The footballing icon ended his 12-year association with United back in 2003 when he joined Real Madrid, signing up for the Galacticos project and going on to strengthen his brand on and off the pitch.

A decade after leaving United, Beckham would hang up his boots following a short spell at Paris Saint-Germain, but not before making some Qatari friends along the way.

Qatar are the nation behind PSG, and after Beckham retired, he was asked to represent the country as an ambassador in the lead up to the country’s World Cup last year.

According to TalkSPORT, Beckham could be drafted in again by a Qatar chief in Sheikh Jassim, and at United no less. It’s claimed that should Jassim’s bid for the club prove successful, Beckham has been offered the role of United ambassador, giving him the chance to represent the club 20 years after his departure, albeit off the pitch.

Beckham made 265 league appearances for United during his 11-year senior career at Old Trafford, and he represented the club for three years at youth level before that, joining from Tottenham’s youth setup. These days, the 48-year-old, who has just released a Netflix documentary about his life and career, is a minority owner of Inter Miami in MLS, and he continues to work in a number of businesses.

As for Sheikh Jassim, there is no certainty that his bid will be successful, with the Glazers yet to decide whether they want to sell the club in full, while Jim Ratcliffe is also rivalling Jassim for the purchase of the club.

Beckham has previously told The Athletic of the current United situation: “It hasn’t been the greatest of times for Manchester United, on the field or off the field. Seeing Erik come in is a breath of fresh air. He has had some tough decisions to make but he has done it in the most elegant way and in a way where he has got the fans on his side.

“Off the field, as a fan and ex-player, I just want it resolved. There has to be a decision [regarding the ownership]. Whoever is running your club, you want them to be passionate, be involved, make the right decisions, bring in the right players and invest in the club.

“Because the club does need investment, whether it’s the training facility, stadium, on the field… these kinds of big things need to be made and changes do need to happen, especially when you see the likes of Man City and what they’re doing.”
