Joe Hugill has signed a new three-year contract with Manchester United and will reportedly join Burton Albion on loan for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old put pen to paper on fresh terms that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2026. United also have the option to extend his stay for a further year.

Journalist Alan Nixon has also reported that the striker will join up with Burton for the second-half of their League One campaign. Gary Mills' side are currently 17th in the league.

Hugill impressed United coaching staff during the summer pre-season schedule, particularly after being bumped up once Amad Diallo picked up a knee injury. The striker has continued to develop alongside the first-team in training this season.

Hugill has been involved in the matchday squad on four occasions, most recently the 2-0 FA Cup win at Wigan Athletic, but is yet to make a senior appearance. He had attracted interest from a number of clubs in the English Football League, including former side Sunderland.

There was also loan interest in Hugill over the summer but United thought it best to keep the young forward at the club so they can work closely with him at a crucial point in his career. He has featured regularly for United's under-21's registering an impressive seven goals in nine Premier League 2 appearances.

Hugill joined United from Sunderland in the summer of 2020, initially joining up with the under-18s before being moved up to the under-21s. He was part of the FA Youth Cup winning squad of 2022, coming off the bench in the final win against Nottingham Forest.

The young striker spent a portion of last season on loan at National League side Altrincham, gaining valuable experience in senior football and scoring once in eight appearances. That spell paid off when he featured in United's first pre-season game last summer, scoring in a 2-0 win against Leeds United in Oslo.
